Baltimore Co. Exec. Asks Voters To Pass Slots Bill

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith is asking voters to follow his lead and vote "yes" on the slots question next week.

Political reporter Pat Warren reports for some, it's still a very emotional issue.

Smith is drumming up support for slots, what he calls a "very serious issue."

When John Bailey heard the county executive was holding a news conference, he made a sign.  Smith stood with state Senators Klausmeier and Stone and members of the County Council.  Bailey stood alone, not part of the organized opposition but he's a voter who's made up his mind.

"There's social costs," Bailey said.  "It hurts businesses."

"This is a source of revenue that's available," Smith said.

John Bailey was not convinced.

"I just think it's really weird to be hurting people," he said.

The Maryland Association of Counties (MACO) plans to step up its endorsement this week.

The state expects slots to generate $660 million a year for education, beginning in 2012.
