AG Says Slots Lawsuit Should Be Thrown Out

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― Maryland's attorney general says a lawsuit against November's constitutional amendment to legalize slot machines should be thrown out.

Attorney General Doug Gansler says there's no principle in constitutional law preventing the General Assembly from allowing Maryland voters to decide whether to legalize slot machines.

Opponents have filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutional amendment and ballot language. They say the language only tells voters that the proceeds will support education, when only about half of it is set aside for schools and 33 percent will go to slot operators.

But the attorney general's office argues that the state's nonpartisan Department of Legislative Services has prepared a summary that includes more details, which will be sent to voters at least one week before the election.
