Sinkhole Leaves 5 P.G. Co. Homes Condemned

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (WJZ) ― Sinkholes are popping up in spots across the state in the fallout from this spring's heavy rain.

Kai Jackson reports a big crater in Temple Hills, Prince George's County is among them.  The sinkhole condemned five homes.

It's the heartbreak of Mother Nature in Temple Hills.

Investigators say a sinkhole caused by this week's rain has gotten worse.

Five homes that sit on the sinkhole have now been condemned.

Mike Singer, whose house is OK now, hopes trouble doesn't come knocking at his door.

Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson surveyed the damage.

He promised residents that the county would help those displaced and investigate how to prevent sinkholes.

According to a report commissioned by the county, the 200-yard-long gash probably opened as a result of soil erosion along a creek running behind the homes.

Residents say a smaller hole had opened in 1998.

Officials are asking Governor Martin O'Malley to consider a disaster declaration for the area.

They say the foundations of most of the homes are stable, but the yards have taken a serious beating.
