I-70 Lane Reopens After Sinkhole Repair

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WJZ) ―

The State Highway Administration says Interstate 70 has fully reopened near Hagerstown following repairs to a sinkhole that prompted closure of one westbound lane.

Mike Schuh reports the delay added up to five hours to some drivers' evening commute.

The back up began ten miles away, so most figured it must have been a big problem.

In Friday's rolling neighborhood on I-70, many were shocked to find a sinkhole was the source of the problem.

"We hope to get home to Missouri before the first of June," said a driver from out of town.

On an interstate, there is no escape.

"We've been on this road for about three days, I think," said the driver.

After hours of rolling through traffic, cars began to roll faster only to see what held up the commute.

To drivers, it was almost beyond comprehension the sinkhole, that was four feet by ten feet on the side of the road, had them trapped in their vehicles for hours.

It wasn't even a bump in the road, but for many it bumped back their Friday plans.
