Police: Man Fatally Shot By Sheriff's Deputies

LANSDOWNE, Md. (WJZ/AP) ― Baltimore County police say a man was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies when they attempted to serve a warrant.

Wayne K. Hicks, 53, of the 2200-block of Gaylawn Drive, died at Shock Trauma, where he was taken after the shooting about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, according to police spokesman Bill Toohey.

Sally Thorner reports four sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on Hicks for failure to appear in court on a civil charge.

When deputies knocked on his door, Hicks opened it and pointed a handgun at them, Toohey said. The deputies fired, striking Hicks, the spokesman said.

The four deputies were placed on administrative leave.

Baltimore County Police homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
