Gunman Shot & Killed By Baltimore Police Officer

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Authorities are pouring over the details of a fatal police-involved shooting in East Baltimore.

Mike Schuh reports police received a call about men fighting on South Robinson Street near Baltimore Street at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The mother of the deceased says she was the one who called police. She says men came into her home and began beating up her son.

Police broke up the fight and arrested one man.

When they went to pat down the woman's son, 21-year old Bryant Worrell, that's when things went wrong.

"He was kind of clutching one side. The officer attempted to pat him down, at which point a confrontation ensued. From what we know, that suspect then attempted to pull a handgun," said Donny Moses, Baltimore Police spokesperson.

Police say Worrell was shot multiple times after he failed to comply with orders. He ran a block down an alley, before collapsing.  He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Worrell's mother tells a different story.

"Then when he started searching him, he threw him on the car, held him by the neck and twisted one of his arms. Then my son broke away and ran down the alley. The police just started shooting him in the back," said Nancy Worrell, victim's mother.

Worrell had just graduated from Briscoe High School in West Baltimore. It is a school for developmentally disabled students. His mother says he is mentally retarded.

"I was so proud of him. They could have shot him in the leg. They didn't have to kill my son," Nancy Worrell said.

A handgun matching the description of the one seen by the officer during the pat down was found in the path Worrell took when running away.  Police would not release the identity of the officer involved other than to say he is a veteran of the force.
