Some Residents, Officials Support Baltimore Mayor

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― Some residents and city officials are expressing support for Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, who was indicted Friday.

City Councilwoman Rochelle "Rikki" Spector and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake expressed support for the mayor Friday.

Weijia Jiang reports an emergency cabinet meeting started around 5 p.m. Friday at City Hall.

It was closed to the public, but some members of the public made it very clear that they're hurt and angry.

The news spread fast across the city of Mayor Dixon's indictment on 12 counts.

She's accused of accepting gifts from developers without reporting them.

"Obviously it's pretty disheartening. Although, I remember last year the thing where they were carting out all those fur coats," said one man.

Many taxpayers remember and they are livid. Some feel it's even bad for the city's economy.

WJZ tried to talk to Dixon's colleague Councilman Jack Young about the charges, but he ran from interviews.

He shares the view of most council members who all have no comment at this time. It's a move some city citizens feel is the right one.

"Sheila's been a representative of this city for 23 years. She's done a fine job, and I think that people should wait and not rush to judgment," said a resident.

Still other residents feel Dixon's accomplishments shouldn't exempt her from penalties if found guilty.
