Gallons Of Sewage Spills Into Patapsco
SYKESVILLE, Md. (AP) ―
Carroll County officials say a contractor's backhoe struck a sewer main, sending 10,000 to 15,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the Patapsco River.
Officials say Tuesday's spill will have minimal effect on county residents, but portions of the river will be closed to fishing and recreation.
The County Bureau of Environmental Health says portions of the river will probably stay closed for the next week and restrictions will remain until the bacteria levels upstream of the spill match the bacteria levels downstream.
State environment officials say they have not seen any effect on aquatic life yet and the spill is not expected to have any lingering effects.
County officials notified Howard and Baltimore counties because the river flows through each of the three counties.
