MdTA Officer Assaulted During Traffic Stop

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

What started as a traffic stop ended with a police-involved shooting, and now an all-out hunt for a suspect on the run has begun.

Mary Bubala reports it happened Saturday night on I-695 northbound near the Key Bridge.

When officers ran the suspect's license plate number, they found a warrant.  When they went to arrest him, they found a whole lot more.

Sean Michael Mapp, 25, is wanted and on the run. Police say late Saturday night Mapp was behind the wheel of a stolen Cadillac caught speeding on a stretch of 695 not far from the Key Bridge.

Mapp is wanted for violating his probation on an armed robbery charge.

"As they were taking him into custody, the subject produced a knife and the officers, at that point, had to escalate their use of force," said Cpl. Jonathan Green.

Officers first tried to stop Mapp using pepper spray, but the winds from Hanna were still strong at that hour.

After Mapp pulled out the knife, one of the officers fired a single shot at him.  Mapp then ran into the woods.

"At this point, we're not actually sure if the round struck the individual or not, but we are looking for him. He remains at large," said Green.

When police searched the stolen Cadillac, they found a fully-loaded stolen gun and marijuana. Now they are trying to find Sean Michael Mapp.

The passenger in the car was arrested on a number of charges.

Police say as part of their routine procedures, the use of the gun by the officer who fired a shot at Mapp is under investigation.

Anyone with information on Sean Mapp is urged to call MdTA Police at 410-537-6700.
