Allen Man Spots Seal Along Wicomico Creek

ALLEN, Md. (AP) ―

An Allen resident was surprised Sunday to see a 50-pound gray seal sunning itself Sunday along the edge of the Wicomico Creek, but experts say seal visits are not uncommon in the area.

Jen Dittmar at the National Aquarium in Baltimore says seals go anywhere they can find large numbers of fish. She adds that it is customary for them to travel alone, not in groups.

According to Dittmar, harbor, harp, hooded and gray seals regularly visit Maryland waters.

Eyewitness Sam Leishear says the seal he spotted looked exactly like the seals seen in National Geographic. He says it did not appear sick or injured.

The seal vanished on Sunday and returned on Monday.
