Dozens of the majestic tall ships are in town. They're getting ready for Thursday's 19th annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
Fells Point and the Inner Harbor are great places to be for the next couple of days. That's because dozens of the majestic tall ships are in town.
Ron Matz reports they're getting ready for Thursday's 19th annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
It's a picture postcard Baltimore style. Fifty-five tall ships are in town for the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, including the 78-foot Liberty.
Sharon Duplessis, family and friends are ready. She is part of Liberty's crew.
"We live aboard the boat. We sail her during the summer and we just love her. She's a beautiful boat. She's 78 feet and she handles easily and we're happy to be in Baltimore," said Duplessis.
The ships will race from the Bay Bridge to Portsmouth, Va., which is 126 miles.
This is much more than just a race. Proceeds benefit youth education programs aimed at Chesapeake Bay preservation.
"This is our 19th year and we've raised over $100,000 for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Youth Program," said Paul Brabazon, dockmaster for the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
People come from all over.
"We have a family and their boat here from Alaska. We have boats from Key West, Fla., Maine and the United Kingdom," said Brabazon.
Thursday's race begins at 1:30 p.m.
