Some Schools Criticized For Cafeteria Menus

WASHINGTON (AP) ― A nonprofit organization has given two Washington-area school systems failing grades for their cafeteria menus, saying they include too much processed meat.

The D.C.-based Cancer Project is affiliated with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which promotes a vegan diet.

The group gave the low grades to D.C. and Montgomery County public schools because they offer processed meats more than 20 percent of the time.

Fairfax and Prince George's counties received "poor" ratings because they offer processed meats more than 15 percent of the time.

Some studies have linked consumption of hot dogs, deli meats, pepperoni and other processed meats to colon and rectal cancer.
