Boy, 11, Brings Grenade To La Plata School

LA PLATA, Md. (AP) ―

Investigators say a grenade brought to a La Plata school by a fifth-grader was determined to be harmless, but not before the school and a nearby administrative building were cleared for more than an hour Wednesday.

Deputy state fire marshal Joe Zurolo says the grenade didn't have a firing mechanism or combustible materials. Officials say it likely dates to the World War II or Korean War era.

The boy found it the woods behind his home and had brought it to the F.B. Gwynn Educational Center to show his teachers and friends.

School officials say access to the school and the Jesse Starkey Administration Building was limited from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. while fire officials examined the grenade.
