Chesapeake HS Student Wins Nordstrom Scholarship

James Dougan thought it would just be a regular school day. Instead, he received a head start on paying off his future college tuition.

An Anne Arundel County high school student got the surprise of a lifetime Wednesday.
Andrea Fujii reports the Chesapeake High School senior was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
James Dougan thought it would just be a regular school day. Instead, he received a head start on paying off his future college tuition.
From hundreds of applications, Dougan is the recipient of a Nordstrom Scholarship, awarded to 40 students across the country.
Only five scholarships are awarded in the capitol area. That includes parts of Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
Besides a high grade point average, Dougan's life story impressed the judges.
His dad passed away two years ago and has since become the father figure for his younger triplet brothers.
"The income was cut in half. It's been very difficult," he said.
With many deserving young people to choose from, James' mother says she's thankful for the gift.
"College and universities are very expensive, and we're very thankful to Nordstrom for offering the opportunity," said Katherine Dougan, James' mother.
Classmates were also caught off guard, but not surprised.
"He's a great guy. He's smart, he's great to be around," said Michael Sanders, classmate.
With high aspirations of becoming a commercial airline pilot and possibly attending Florida Tech, a $50,000 a year school, Dougan says this award lifts some stress off his family.
"It means a lot. That's $10,000 that my family doesn't have to pay for," he said.
This is the second year Nordstrom has awarded these scholarships in the area.
