Sailing Trip From Md. Ends In Bermuda Rescue

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

The Coast Guard has rescued a 4-year-old girl and four other boaters who were sailing from Annapolis to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Guard spokesman Lt. J.G. Jason Gale says a helicopter was used Sunday to rescue the family after their 47-foot sailboat lost steering and propulsion near Bermuda.

The family used a satellite phone to call for help. A rescue swimmer lowered from the helicopter rescued the family amid strong winds and high waves.

Petty Officer Andy Kendrick says the family is recovering in Bermuda.

The boat was left to drift, although Gale says notices sent to boaters might mean the boat will be found and returned to the owners.
