The state of Maryland is paying $40,000 for a new rug for the State House in these tough economic times.
Adam May reports under former Governor Robert Ehrlich's administration a rug was ordered to go into the newly renovated State House.
At Kleenize Rugs on Falls Road, Richard Crafton has been cleaning, repairing and making fine rugs for three decades.
"What can be drawn on a desk can be made into a rug of any size," he said.
He's intrigued by the details surrounding the new 1,200 square foot rug Governor Ehrlich ordered.
"I could make one," he said.
But the rug was made in India and $37,500 was sent overseas.
Locally, Kleenize only sees a handful of fine rugs worth that much. Most are worth about $12 to $16 a square foot. The state spent almost double.
There have been days when Kleenize sees a quarter million dollars worth of rugs come through the door. Taxpayer advocates are glad the state didn't spend that much.
"The rug stands at this time for bad economic conditions and government not caring a bit," Dee Hodges with the Maryland Taxpayers Association said.
News of the purchase comes as the state faces steep cuts to make up for a budget shortfall.
