State To Close Rosewood

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― A Baltimore County lawmaker says state officials plan to phase out Maryland's largest residential center for people with developmental disabilities after reports documented serious shortcomings in care.

Delegate Dan Morhaim, whose district includes the Rosewood Center in Owings Mills, says officials have informed him that the center will be shuttered over a period of about 18 months.

Governor Martin O'Malley has scheduled a news conference at the
troubled facility Tuesday.

Currently, 156 people live at the center, which has a capacity for 225 residents.

A spokesman for O'Malley declined to comment.

A state report released last month found that medication mistakes and other failures in caring for people at the center were still occurring, despite repeated warnings and state sanctions.

While Rosewood has strong supporters, it has long been considered a troubled institution.

A patient stabbed another patient last year and admissions to Rosewood were halted a year ago.
