Balt. Co. Church Raises Funds For Ike Victims

 Red Cross

WOODLAWN, Md. (WJZ) ― A Woodlawn church is raising funds for those affected by Hurricane Ike.

Derek Valcourt reports it was a message heard at churches around the country to help raise funds for the victims of Ike, and one local Baltimore County church is rising to the challenge.

Physically they are far from Texas, but at Rising Sun First Baptist Church, their hearts are near Houston.

Their worship service calls for prayer and donations to help those suffering in the hardest hit areas of the Gulf Coast.

"They say it's going to be a month before all the power is restored, and that is just frightening," said Rocky Twyman.

"As a family person, I know that it must be horrible to have to leave everything and knowing the magnitude of that storm. The devastation, it has to be horrible," said Rosetta Anderson.

Many at the church have only seen the storm's destruction on the news. But the images of ruined homes and stories of Texans with nowhere to go pull at their heart strings and their purse strings.

"Not to have a home is the worse thing that could happen short of death. It is a kind of death not to have a place to lay your head," said Rev. Emmett Burns.

"I don't have any relatives there, don't even have any friends there, but we are all in the family of Christ. And that's important. If you were in trouble and you were a living and a breathing human being, it is my duty to help you," said Fannie Coates.

Those that can't help with their money say they're helping in the best way they can--with their prayers.

Those unable to attend the event can make out checks to:

Baptist World Alliance
RSFBC
2211 St. Luke's Lane
Woodlawn, Md. 21207

Please write Hurricane Ike at the bottom of the check.
