Students at a Baltimore County elementary school got a reading lesson Thursday from a special guest star. That's because March is considered Read Across Maryland month.
Derek Valcourt reports it's part of a yearly campaign to encourage kids to spend more time with their noses buried in books.
At Carney Elementary School, fourth graders like Kimarra Smith love getting lost in pages.
On Thursday the pages read by the children were shared with the whole class and Governor Martin O'Malley.
His visit was part of a month-long, statewide reading initiative designed to help encourage kids to read, not just in school but for the rest of their lives.
That's why the kids were all given trademark Dr. Seuss hats marking the famous children's author's 105th birthday.
O'Malley says the message is as much for parents as it is for the kids.
"Spark that curiosity for reading in your child. For a parent to read to their child it's probably the most important thing you can do to further their career as a student and their levels of achievement," said O'Malley.
For Kimarra, O'Malley's message has already sunk in.
"I like that when you read, it takes your mind off to different places, like where you're reading. That's why before I go to sleep every night, I read a book so I can dream about what I was reading," said Kimarra.
