Crime Alerts Issued After Towson Student Raped

  Safety Tips From Towson Police

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) ― Earlier this week, police say a Towson University student was attacked near campus.

Weijia Jiang reports police are now giving new safety guidelines for students to prevent another assault.

It was meant to be a simple, weekly chore at her Donnybrook apartment for a 21-year-old Towson University student.

"The young lady had been shopping and unloading groceries from her car when this man came up behind her," said Baltimore County Police spokesman Bill Toohey.

Investigators say that man then acted like he had a gun, forced the woman two blocks away into nearby bushes, attacked and then raped her.

Since the incident, police have been canvassing the area around Knollwood Rd. where it happened, but the suspect is still out there.

"It was a black male, much of the time he was behind her. When he began to assault her, it was not the time for her, she was just terrified and traumatized," said Toohey.

Police say the incident most likely has nothing to do with Towson University even though the victim is a student there.

Still, classmates are high strung knowing the attacker could strike again.

"You never know what could happen to you. It's kind of scary, but we just try to stay with other people and big groups," said Kaitlin Tull, a Towson University student.

"You should just never be alone. That's just my opinion. I don't think any girl should be alone," said Alyssa Matriccino, student.

All students received an e-mail alert from the university about the assault, and now police are pleading for information.

"It may have been a crime of opportunity, and he may not come back there again. On the other hand, he may come back there again.  If anyone sees anything that doesn't look right, call 911," said Toohey.

University Police want to remind everyone to be mindful of your surroundings and to increase your awareness of suspicious people and situations.

They also warn against visiting isolated areas on or near campus.

Anyone with information on this sexual assault should call Baltimore County Police. There could be an award of up to $2,000 for information.
