Baby Found Dead In Milford Mill Apartment Fire

MILFORD MILL, Md. (WJZ) ―

A fast moving fire in Milford Mill not only destroyed the homes of 19 people, it took the life of an infant.

Mike Schuh reports, the fire moved so quickly, six-month-old Malik Michael Hasan was lost in the flames.

But there were a couple of heros in the Sunday night fire, the men and women who kicked down doors and awakened those who lived inside.

Fire investigators were on the scene all day trying to determine what started the fire.

It happened at 24 Stockmill Road at the St. Charles at Olde Court Garden apartments.

"My oldest son came and got me out of bed and told me there's a fire at the building across the way, and when I looked out, it was a frightening sight.  It was pretty much rolling full blown," said Monica Clark, neighbor.

Emergency officials are assisting the 19 people who were displaced by the fire and the people who were in an adjacent building.

Those who live in the building marvel that more people weren't killed.

Cinder blocks are believed to have kept the fire from being worse. The fire blocks did their job containing the fire to only the center apartments.

It started on the third floor and neighbors say one man made the difference.

"One of the gentleman, he actually got so many people out.  He had to kick the doors in and lift the lay over the rail.  He was just awesome," said one fire victim.

Unfortunately, no one found baby Malik in time. At 6 a.m. search dogs found him on the third floor. The same floor where the fire started.

No one else was injured.

Fire officials are still investigating.
