Hampden Residents Exercise To Help School

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

If you were on Roland Avenue in Hampden Friday morning, you probably saw a lot of people outside.  It was an exercise for a good cause.

Ron Matz reports on this year's "Run for Education" to benefit one neighborhood school.

They're going and going and it's all for a good cause. More than 200 students, faculty and parents are raising money for their school, St. Thomas Aquinas.

"It's total community involvement. That's what makes it a wonderful day. We all come together to work for the good of the children," said Sister Marie Gustatus, principal of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Some walked three miles for the school's third annual event.

Sponsors help make it happen.

"We raised $33,000 last year and we're trying to beat that total this year. The purpose is to buy new math materials, new desks, chairs and carpet. Any money leftover will go toward building a new playground that we want for the summer," said Juanita Stahl, race coordinator.

Every participant walks for at least one hour, including some players from the Baltimore Blast.

The school also gets support from the Hampden Business Association.
