Union Official Requested Vests For Museum Guards

WASHINGTON (AP) ― A union official says he requested that U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum guards be equipped with protective vests during contract negotiations two years ago, but they were never issued.

Assane Faye is the Washington district director of the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America, which represents guards at the museum.

Faye says he pushed for protective vests after a man made threatening remarks to guards several years ago. He says the company that employs the guards seemed open to the idea, but the vests were never issued.

One guard, Stephen T. Johns, was fatally wounded Wednesday by an 88-year-old gunman.

Wackenhut security, which employed Johns, says Johns was hit by a bullet in the upper left torso. In response Faye's claims, the company said only that all officers were wearing appropriate equipment as specified in the union contract.
