First District GOP Primary Heats Up

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Things are heating up in the First District Republican primary this week. Representative Wayne Gilchrest plans an event in Annapolis this week with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Maryland's former lieutenant governor, Michael Steele.

Gilchrest is hoping to polish his credentials as a conservative as he faces two serious challengers. Two Republican state senators -- E.J. Pipkin and Andy Harris -- are challenging the nine-term incumbent.

Gilchrest is seen as vulnerable in a Republican primary because he sometimes splits with his party's leaders, especially on the war in Iraq. Gilchrest's camp is trying to promote the support of Gingrich and Steele as evidence that Gilchrest is a solid Republican.

Also this week, Harris and Pipkin return to work together in the state Senate. They vow there won't be any fireworks in the legislature, though the two are battling each other in the campaign.

The primary vote is Feb. 12.
