White Marsh Mall Opens After Water Main Break

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

White Marsh Mall reopened Friday afternoon after a water main break knocked out power at the mall for hours, forcing an evacuation.

Officials say a BGE contractor hit a water main around 1:30 p.m. and it flooded into one of the main electrical systems on Honeygo Boulevard.

Crews were trying to put in electrical conduits by the Sears store when they hit the large water main.

Kelly McPherson reports White Marsh Mall was without power for several hours. Nearby businesses were also affected.  Power to the mall was restored around 4 p.m.

Officials say 160 BGE customers were without power for a time, but the problem was isolated and power restored.

"Baltimore Gas and Electric accidentally struck a water main on the property this afternoon, causing a power outage at White Marsh Mall. For the safety and security of our customers, White Mash Mall was temporarily evacuated. However, BGE and the Baltimore County Fire Department made the necessary repairs to the water and electric and the mall has been reopened," said Charles Crerand, senior general manager of White Marsh Mall.

No one was injured when trying to evacuate the mall.

Several businesses urged customers to return once they were able to reopen for business.

Those businesses say they lost money during the busy rush hour.
