Strong Storms Cause Damage To Md. & Va.
MARYLAND (WJZ) ―
From Mississippi to Maryland, strong storms crossed states Thursday and early Friday, damaging homes and threatening to flood some areas along the way.
Alex DeMetrick reports planes went airborne and were blown off the runway at the Greensborough-Highpoint Airport in North Carolina as a violent system moved up from the south toward Maryland.
Along the way at least five homes suffered severe damage or were destroyed outright after a tornado touched down. It killed one and injured four others.
Northern Virginia took the next hit, where witnesses say a smaller tornado glanced off neighborhoods, ripping the side off a home there.
But in Maryland, the storm was mostly a rain maker and it came down very heavy in Prince George's County, where parts of Route 50 went under water.
"My car somewhat stalled right in the middle of the puddle, about 20 yards in front of this vehicle here," said one man stuck in the storm.
Effects of the rain aren't over yet, though.
As run-off makes its way into streams, waterways that are normally shallow and slow moving can pick up deadly speed.
Parts of the Jones Falls are very treacherous and they can be a dangerous lure for children.
Parts of Washington, D.C. and Maryland got more than three inches of rain.
Flooding on railroad tracks forced disruptions and delays for commuters using MARC Friday morning. The Penn Line service terminated at New Carrollton, Md.
