2 People Killed In Police-Involved Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ―

Baltimore police say two men were killed by officers early Saturday morning after police returned fire that came from an unruly crowd outside a union hall.

Police are still investigating why this all started, but they are certain of a few things.

Weijia Jiang reports two officers were caught up in a shooting that left two people dead, all during what was supposed to be a celebration.

At 1:30 Saturday morning on the 1400-block of Bush Street, multiple gunshots rang out, shaking up the usually tame neighborhood in Southwest Baltimore.

A group of Independence Day party-goers rented out a banquet hall for the night.  Police say security guards hustled the crowd outside after people became unruly.  Police called the scene "chaotic."

"It was a large crowd.  There were multiple arrests made at the scene," said Sterling Clifford with Baltimore City Police.

Once the officers got to the scene, they immediately identified the suspects and confronted them.  That's when the men pointed their guns at the officers.

"The three men came toward the officers.  There was an exchange of gunfire, essentially a gun battle.  When it was over, two of the three men were dead, one was wounded," Clifford said.

Police are still investigating what sparked this brawl and neighbors are hoping it's not a sign of how these quiet, tree-lined streets are changing.

"That's awful.  I hope that doesn't happen again because I've been here for 10 years and I never seen anything like that," a neighbor said.

Right now, police are not sure if both or just one officer fired shots.  Neither one was hurt but they are both on administrative leave.

The third man who was shot was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
