Police shoot a man just outside the doors of Union Memorial Hospital. It happened Wednesday night just after 8 p.m.
Derek Valcourt explains what led up to the shooting.
Police say the man was stalking a patient at the hospital. They say he already tried to kill her once, and Wednesday he came to the hospital armed with a knife.
Police had been waiting for Phillip Holland, 61, at the door after they got a tip he was coming to confront his girlfriend who was a patient at the hospital.
"We tried to bring him into custody peacefully. He resisted arrest, he became violent -- eventually pulling out a weapon. He attacked officers, and had to be tased, shot and then tased again," said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City police spokesman.
Holland was rushed to Shock Trauma, but will survive his injuries. A Jan. 16 police report indicates he had already attacked the victim once before.
The report says Holland punched her repeatedly in the face and stomach at a Royal Farms store on 36th Avenue in Hampden just down the street from his home on Roland Avenue.
Domestic violence experts know stalking is a growing problem in the U.S.
"It really doesn't surprise me to hear this," said Janice Miller, House of Ruth client services.
About 3.4 million people are stalked every year, most often by someone they know. Stalkers use weapons to threaten their victims in one out of five cases.
House of Ruth workers say this story could have had a tragic ending.
"It's really great that the police in this case took the concerns very seriously and were there because serious harm could have come to the victim if they had not intervened," said Miller.
Holland now faces multiple criminal charges, including attempted murder and assault on a police officer.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
