Minister, NAACP Say Better Police Training Needed

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― A minister and an NAACP official are calling for better police training following the shooting of an unarmed woman in Baltimore.

Jessica Kartalija reports the Rev. Johnny Golden Sr., president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, said the shooting has outraged many he speaks with.

Marvin "Doc" Cheatham, president of the Baltimore branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said police officers who don't live in Baltimore need to better understand the community in which they work.

Baltimore police say they did not find a weapon after an officer shot and wounded a woman who they had been told was armed. The officer shot the woman Thursday morning at a light rail stop in the Cherry Hill neighborhood.

Police spokesman Sterling Clifford issued a statement saying, "It is too premature to jump to any conclusions, but a thorough investigation is underway."

Clifford also says the agency spent $2 million in the past year on "use of force" training.
