Police Shoot 62-Year-Old Woman

COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) ― Police investigate a shooting outside a place you might not expect.  Police shot a woman at a senior citizen complex in Columbia after officers say she came at them with a knife.

Dennis Edwards has more on what detectives have learned.

Investigators continue to look into a police-involved shooting that came after a confrontation with a mental subject.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 was overhead soon after property managers called police to Parkview Apartments at Snowden River Parkway.  Pearl Wardel Harris, 62, was inside her third floor apartment acting and speaking irrationally when police arrived.

Attempts to talk to Harris apparently failed.  In the process, police say one officer felt threatened when Harris produced a knife.  The officer fired one shot.

Other residents were asked to stay inside their apartments during the confrontation but many weren't surprised when they found out which neighbor was involved.

"She needed to be in a mental home.  She was very peculiar.  She told me she had no friends.  She had acquaintances but no friends," said Peggy O'Shea.

This is not the first time Harris' neighbors have seen or heard unpredictable behavior from her.

Harris is expected to fully recover.  The officer is on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
