Police Identify Stabbing Suspect In Hanover Attack

HANOVER, Md. (WJZ) ― A man walked into an Anne Arundel County business armed with box cutters.  We're learning more about 30-year-old Imani Lee, who police were forced to shoot after a 20-minute standoff.

Mike Hellgren spoke to a close friend of the suspect, Imani Rashad Lee.

Rakim Muhammad was a close friend and coworker of Lee's.  He doesn't believe Lee would do something like this.

The area around Trojan Alarm Solutions was teeming with police Monday.  WJZ was on the scene as chaos unfolded at the business park near BWI.

Police say Lee, 30, held another man hostage, armed with a box cutter .  He was shot after police say he refused to drop the weapon.

Muhammad says he's known Lee for almost a decade.

"We became very good friends," he said.  "I've never known him to have a temper, where if he had any type of weapon and officers asked him to throw it down that he wouldn't."

The survivor, who has since been released from the hospital, says Lee punched, kicked and stabbed him.  He says Lee told him, "I'm going to be killed in this and I'm going to kill you, too."

"The officers feared for the safety of the victim and that's why they fired," said Justin Mulcahy.

The victim and Lee didn't know each other.  Police are investigating the motive.

"I think he had previously done some work for them," Muhammad said.  "It's just a tragedy.  It's a sad time, not just for me, but I'm sure for his family as well."

Police have declined to identify the officers involved in this incident.
