Montgomery Co. Police Seek Police Impersonators

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJZ) ― Police in Montgomery County are looking for two men involved in a clever scheme.

Mary Bubala reports at least one occasion, the suspects stopped a woman in Silver Spring pretending to be police officers and they robbed her.

The lights came on at Colesville Road and Southwood Avenue in Silver Spring just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

"We believe this was a team, an accomplice," said a Montgomery County Police officer.

A 39-year-old woman behind the wheel pulled over and saw a second vehicle with lights.

"That vehicle made a U-turn and pulled in behind the other car very similar to what we do on traffic stops," said the officer.

But they weren't police.  The woman was robbed and the impersonators pulled away.

For many women motorists, a night police stop is anything but routine.

"It made me uncomfortable. The lights were going, and they pulled me over, but other than them having a uniform on, you didn't know. Just the uniform. You can't read it or anything," said one woman who had been stopped by the real police.

Around Washington, local and federal police agencies are counted by dozens. They cruise in everything from Fords, to Dodges, to Chevys-- marked or not.

On the Web, police equipment comes legally via mail order to anyone.

"Which is exactly why we say if you get stopped and you're uncomfortable, you can pull into a well lit area. You can ask for the officer's I.D. You can also call 911 and tell the dispatcher you're being stopped by a police officer," said the Montgomery County police officer.

Both suspects are described as white men between the ages of 20 and 25. Both were wearing blue, police-style outfits.
