Police Arrest Child For Pointing Gun At Classmate
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
A fifth-grade boy is under arrest after school leaders caught him with a handgun on the playground.
Gigi Barnett reports parents arrived at Coldstream Park Elementary in Northeast Baltimore to pick up students from school Wednesday afternoon and heard more about a gun on campus.
"I was shocked because this is a pretty decent school to come to. It was definitely a surprise," said parent James Doggett.
School leaders say around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, the fifth-grader pointed an unloaded gun at a fourth-grader while the two were on the playground.
School police arrested the fifth-grader.
"Too much of this is just going on in the schools. It's just like, I don't know what we can prevent it from happening," said grandparent Arlene Brown.
Earlier in April in Baltimore County, school leaders caught a first grader with two fully-loaded guns at Randallstown Elementary School.
He stashed one of the guns in his pocket and police found another in his locker. Police say he picked up the guns from an uncle's house and the 7-year-old thought they were toys.
"If he could have gotten hold of a gun, just imagine if he would have pulled the trigger at the school. Unnecessarily a life would have been gone," said one parent.
"I think this is a very good school overall. But like I said, these parents have to discipline their kids," said grandparent Joyce Oliver.
City school leaders aren't saying much about the gun on campus or what's happened to the fifth-grader since.
In a written statement to Eyewitness News, Vanessa Pyatt with Baltimore City Schools says the student who had the handgun was charged as a juvenile and school disciplinary process is proceeding according to the school's discipline code.
The fifth-grader is charged with possession of a deadly weapon.
