Community Rebuilds Playground Devastated By Fire

More Information About Volunteering At The Playground

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― It's a story that devastated a city neighborhood. A fire left the Y Stadium Playground in ruins, but thanks to hundreds of volunteers it's being re-built.

Ron Matz has more on how a cornerstone of the community is rising from the ashes.

Eight months later, the playground at Y Stadium Place is being re-built. Mayor Sheila Dixon grabbed a shovel Tuesday and joined other volunteers.

"We still need more volunteers and we are going everywhere in recruiting to help in this effort. They're going to be out here all day today and the rest of the week," said Dixon.

Many of these same volunteers helped build the playground four years ago. It cost $500,000.

"We stood here and watched this playground burn in September of last year and we vowed at that moment that we would re-build and here we are -- and re-build in time for the children to have this playground for this summer," said Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke.

The mayor says Baltimoreans always respond when there's a call for help.

"Baltimore is a very special city. It's special because of its people. It's the people who live in our communities who make Baltimore so unique compared to other places," said Dixon.

"I love doing this work. A lot of nice things have been done around here. Just trying to help keep our neighborhood going," said Karen Morris, volunteer.

The state contributed $175,000 for the project and volunteers hope it will make the playground safer and more secure.

"It just really shows the commitment that people have, not only who live in this area, but people from all over the city who come to help in this great effort," said Dixon.

It's all about working together to re-build a community treasure.

"This is the Memorial Stadium site. The Miracle on 33rd Street is now happening again in that we're re-building what was lost," said Clarke.

The re-building of the playground will continue through Sunday and more volunteers are needed. Click here for more information.
