Baltimore Police Arrest 2 Youths In Dog Burning

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Police have arrested two people they believe set fire to a pit bull two weeks ago.

Kai Jackson
reports on the case that led police to 17-year-old twin boys.

Police have been looking for those responsible for setting the dog on fire and causing its death since it happened on May 27.

Baltimore residents and people around the state set up a reward, topping $24,000.

It's the heart-rending aftermath of an act of animal cruelty.

"Somebody obviously covered her in gasoline and lit her on fire," said Jennifer Meade-Brause,Executive Director of BARCS, Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter.

"Her tongue, her eyes, her pads are scorched off, her vulva, unbelievable. We are speechless, and overwhelmed with emotion," said Dr. Marcella Bonner of Swan Animal Hospital.

"We saw this dog in flames, he was screaming and rolling around fully in flames," said Officer Syreeta Teel. "It was sad because I'd never heard a dog make the sound, the scream he made. I've never heard it before and it was just cruel."

Despite their best efforts, veterinarians were unable to save Ms. Mercy, who was also called Phoenix.  Her kidneys started to fail and then she was euthanized.

Officer Syreeta Teel used a sweatshirt to put the fire out.  Officer Teale was later honored for her compassion.
"Because of your quick action a number of people have been touched by this act and I wanted to note that because of what took place people are very series and committed to finding the individual who committed this heinous crime," said Mayor Sheila Dixon.

Police announced the arrests Monday, but the juveniles' names have not been released. Police weren't releasing the names of the twins because of their age.

Information on the circumstances around the arrest have also not been released.

Police have not commented on the status of the reward money.
