Michael Phelps Purchases Home In Fells Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

After four years in Michigan and the Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps has made it clear how excited he is about returning home to Baltimore.

Mike Schuh reports his new digs are right on the water.

In London, promoting the next summer Olympics, Michael mentioned he's ready for change.

"I guess the last 10 or 154 years it's been the same thing for the whole time," said Phelps.

When he returns, he'll be coming home to his new neighborhood, Fells Point or, as it has been rechristened, "Phelps Point."

"It's a wonderful neighborhood. It's certainly grown from where the winos used to hang," said neighbor Tom Powell.

The neighborhood has grown quite a bit--in price and height. With a commanding view of the water tucked behind an apartment building, Michael's new pad is four floors, 4,000 square feet and $1.7 million. Phelps will likely set the pool record at the new place, too.

"I think he ought to move over here because it's a nice building. But he should have bought over here, but he bought over there. He don't have a good waterview there," said Richard Bailey.

Actually, he does. It looks over the boats back at other high-dollar homes.

"I think it may create a lot more activity in the neighborhood," said Tom Powell.

Activity indeed.  Phelps is sure to get a lot of attention on the street.

One Baltimorean has some advice for how to greet their new neighbor.

"I think they should congratulate him and leave him alone," said Bailey.

Details for a parade and a welcome home celebration for Phelps still have not been announced.
