A beetle that has destroyed millions of ash trees in the U.S. has turned up in Charles County, and officials are expanding a quarantine in an attempt to contain the pest.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture says the emerald ash borer was detected last month in a wooded area just across the Prince George's County border.
The beetle was detected about two miles outside an existing eradication zone and about a half mile from where an emerald ash borer was trapped earlier this summer.
Officials say the discovery has led to an expanded quarantine that prohibits anyone from moving ash trees or any firewood out of Prince George's or Charles counties. Residents also are urged not to plant ash trees in the area.
The small, metallic green beetle was first found in Michigan inĀ 2002, and has reached at least seven other states, killing tens of millions of trees.
