Patterson High School is hoping to go back to normal after a disruptive day Tuesday.
Students were quickly ushered out of Baltimore's Patterson High School as police, the bomb squad and hazmat teams moved in. That's after at least two explosions sent fumes racing through the hallways.
Dennis Edwards reports one or more students were involved in setting multiple incendiary devices that sent one school police officer to Bayview Medical Center.
Students evacuated Patterson High School Tuesday after two water bottles filled with unknown chemicals exploded in the cafeteria and inside a locker.
"And when we walked in there, it was like a bottle in there. Somebody had set something in there on fire, and it made like a big explosion in the cafeteria. A lot of smoke was going through the cafeteria," said Jonah Chatman, student.
Students say fumes got into classrooms. A spokesperson told
WJZ's newspaper partner, the Baltimore Sun, a school police officer was sickened by the fumes and was taken to Bayview Medical Center and was in stable condition.
One student was arrested and now officers are looking for at least one more student suspect.
"Yeah, I smelled the chemical," said student Kenneth Bullard. "I can't explain the smell, but it was like nasty."
Students initially evacuated were later allowed to go home.
The city police bomb squad and hazmat teams were brought in while stunned students watched and wondered.
"When I seen it, I thought it was funny at first. But then it was like a lot of people could have gotten injured, so I took it very seriously," said Chatman.
Beyond the school police officer, no one else was injured. Police consider this an active investigation and expect to announce additional arrests.
