Patapsco River Reopened Following Sewage Spill

SYKESVILLE, Md. (AP) ― Carroll County officials say the Patapsco River is open again after a contractor's backhoe struck a sewer main, spilling as much as 15,000 gallons of untreated sewage.

Officials said Tuesday's spill will have minimal effect on county residents, but portions of the river were initially closed to fishing and recreation.

State environment officials said they have not seen any effect on aquatic life yet and the spill is not expected to have any lingering effects.

County officials notified Howard and Baltimore counties because the river flows through each of the three counties.
