Dam Removal Project Gets Stimulus Funds
BALTIMORE (AP) ―
The removal of two dams from the Patapsco River will go forward thanks to $4 million in federal stimulus funds.
The project is one of two in Maryland that will get money from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
American Rivers, the group behind the effort, says it will provide jobs for 42 people over a yearlong period. The group says getting rid of the Union and Simkins dams will open up 8 miles of the Patapsco, improving habitat for native fish and expanding recreation opportunities.
The dams were built about 100 years ago and no longer serve a functional purpose.
Another $1 million in stimulus funds will go to a coastline restoration project on the Potomac River near Accokeek.
