Record Set In Pete's Pancake Eating Contest

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― So how many pancakes can you eat in an hour? You found out this morning if you were watching Eyewitness News Morning Edition.

Ron Matz reports on the stomach stretching event that's become a Baltimore tradition.

As the sun came up, Pete's Grill was the place to be.

The griddle was hot and loaded up.  The contestants were ready for the annual Pete's Grill Pancake Eating Contest.

"Somebody said to me the other day this is the first major event of the holiday season in Baltimore," said Dave Stahl, owner of Pete's Grill.

There were 10 contestants in the men's division and five women vying for the ladies crown.  The winner gets $500.

When it's time to dig in, some roll up and dunk.  Ian Hickman stuffed it in and even brought his own syrup.

Hopkins senior Angela Kaon was in her first contest.  She had grand plans if she won.

"I'm going to spend half the money and donate the rest to a charity," said Kaon.

It's a sixty minute gastronomic orgy.  Angela did win, eating seven-and-a-half pancakes.  Ian won for the guys and set a new mark with twenty.

"It's an hour-long competition.  You need to pace yourself, get comfortable, stay in rhythm and you got it," said Hickman.

Contestants paid $20 each to enter. This was the 10th Annual Pancake Contest at Pete's Grill.
