The survivor of what police say was a gun battle with officers appeared before a judge Monday afternoon.
Investigators say he and two relatives fired at officers during an out-of-control party in Southwest Baltimore.
Mike Hellgren is following the latest twists in this developing story.
A Fourth of July party full of armed guests at the AFSCME Union Hall in Southwest Baltimore turned into chaos. Police are investigating what ignited the violence shortly after security began kicking unruly guests out.
"I think it's probably a one time thing, but you can probably expect something like that to happen on the Fourth of July with people drinking and stuff like that," said Tanesha Collins.
Charging documents reveal three of those people shot guns in the air. Officers responded.
"It was a fairly chaotic scene because of the number of people there. It was difficult to secure because of the number of people who were armed," said Sterling Clifford, Baltimore City Police spokesperson.
As the three fled in a car, investigators say they fired at the officers, who fired back. Haywood Theodore White Jr., 18, and Raemond Paul White, 21, were killed. Darryl White, 22, survived. He was in court Monday afternoon.
In court, Darryl White's right hand and arm were bandaged and he was wearing a polo shirt that appeared to have bloodstains on it.
The judge ordered his bail stay at $175,000. He faces weapons and drug charges. In the charging documents, police say they found marijuana and guns in the car.
"The three men came toward the officers. There was an exchange of gunfire, essentially a gun battle," Clifford said.
The deaths at the party bring the number of police-involved shootings to 12.
Eyewitness News contacted AFSCME. The union has not answered any questions about the party.
Eyewitness News learned the building was leased and this was not a union function.
"That's awful. I hope it doesn't happen again because I've been here for 10 years and I've never heard or seen anything like that," said Sharlene Cochrane, who lives nearby.
Police are still sorting through the large number of weapons confiscated at the party.
