Officer Struck By Car During Stop

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A Baltimore police officer was struck by a car in South Baltimore while trying to make a stop, and police had to chase the suspect down.

Gigi Barnett reports investigators say the woman running had just walked away from the hit-and-run accident involving the police officer. Neighbors say they witnessed the whole thing.

"I saw this van hit this car over here," said one neighbor.

Police say the chase started around noon. Officers were working on an undercover operation near the 1100-block of South Carey Street when a white minivan turned right onto Ostend Street and struck a gray car and an officer.

The woman behind the wheel jumped out and ran away.

They found her blocks away walking. When she spotted them, she ran.

Neighbors on Ostend Street say it's happened before because their street is a dead-end road. They say it's an ideal place for car thieves to get rid of a vehicle.

"The criminals know that if they want to run from the police, they ditch the car here and take off on the street," said another resident.

Emergency workers rushed the officer to Shock Trauma for non life-threatening injuries.
