D.C. Teen Killed, 7 Shot In Minutes
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
District of Columbia police planned to resume checkpoints in the Trinidad area following a series of shootings early Saturday.
Police say five separate incidents occurred between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. in the northeast D.C. neighborhood.
Officers found a man with stab wounds and seven people with gunshot wounds, including 13-year-old Alonzo Robinson, who was killed.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a group in a vehicle repeatedly approached people on the street, robbing and shooting them.
The checkpoints were scheduled to begin 7 p.m. Saturday, and continue until 7 p.m. Thursday at various points on Mt. Olivet Road, Bladensburg Road, Florida Avenue and Trinidad Avenue.
Officers will check drivers' ID and turn away those who don't have a "legitimate purpose" in the area, as they did during the checkpoints held last month in Trinidad.
The checkpoint initiative has become the subject of a class action lawsuit, with civil liberties groups saying the initiative is unconstitutional and ineffective.
