Virginia Defeats Maryland In NCAA Quarterfinals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Ben Rubeor's goal with 31 seconds remaining in overtime lifted second-seeded Virginia to an 8-7 victory over No. 8 Maryland on Saturday in an NCAA tournament quarterfinal.

Rubeor waltzed in from behind the cage and bounced a 5-yard shot past Maryland keeper Jason Carter for his third goal of the game, sending Virginia to the semifinals for the 18th time. Rubeor used a pick to elude his defender and came around the cage unattended.

Danny Glading added two goals and an assist for Virginia, and Bud Petit made 14 saves as the Cavaliers held the Terrapins scoreless in the second half and overtime. Virginia (14-3) has won four overtime games this season.

Grant Catalino and Brian Farrell scored two goals apiece for Maryland (10-6), which led 6-4 at halftime. Jeremy Sieverts had a goal and two assists as Terrapins outshot the Cavaliers (40-35) and won the important possession categories of face-offs (11-8) and ground balls (36-22).

Maryland managed to put only 21 of 40 shots on cage and had an apparent goal to open the third quarter disallowed because an attackman was in the crease.
