NAACP Board May Select New President

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

The NAACP's board of directors is meeting Friday in Baltimore and may select a new president for the civil rights organization.

NAACP spokesman Richard McIntire says the presidential search committee interviewed 20 people out of more than 200 initial applicants and has come up with three finalists.

He would not say who those three people are.

Friday's board meeting is the first since the search committee concluded its work.

The executive committee will make a recommendation from the three finalists to the full board, which could make a decision Friday or Saturday.

Former Verizon executive Bruce Gordon resigned in March 2007 after leading the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for just 19 months. He clashed with board members over philosophy and leadership style.

NAACP General Counsel Dennis C. Hayes has been interim president since Gordon's departure.
