Woman Killed For Refusing To Give Man Cigarette
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Baltimore police are searching for a brazen killer.
Derek Valcourt reports the man walked up to a couple and asked for a cigarette. When they refused, he killed the woman in cold blood.
The devastated family held a vigil Sunday night for the woman who held her ground and paid the ultimate price.
Friends and family laid a blanket over the blood-soaked sidewalk where 29-year-old Dawn Shipley lay dying early Saturday morning, shot in a major artery.
"I think it's terrible for a mother to have to go through this. All this shooting out here has to stop," said mother Diana Shipley.
Family members say Dawn and her boyfriend were walking home from the corner store when they were approached by a suspect who asked for cigarettes. When Dawn refused to give them, she was shot multiple times.
"Over a pack of cigarettes, over nonsense, over something stupid. It didn't make sense," said brother Alex Shipman.
Family, friends and neighbors paid tribute to Dawn's memory while hoping her killer is caught.
"This is senseless, senseless! She didn't deserve this. No one deserved it, but her most of all. She didn't deserve this. You just don't take a person's life just because they don't want to give you a cigarette," said Aunt Bea.
"She was like a daughter to me, she really was. And I'm taking it pretty hard. It's not really hitting me hard yet, but when they get ready to bury her it's going to really hit me," said aunt, Ruth Bass.
"I don't care what I have to do, we're going to get him," said cousin Britney Rotmon.
Baltimore police have not yet released a sketch of the murder suspect.
