New Pond Offers Oasis Of Calm In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

It may be hard to believe, but right now you can find a whitewater mountain stream in Baltimore.

Ron Matz reports just head to Cold Spring Lane and The Alameda and enjoy a taste of tranquility in the city.

Amidst the asphalt jungles of Baltimore, there's an oasis of calm. It's the new 16,000 gallon mountain stream on the grounds of the League for People with Disabilities.

It's an urban habitat complete with lotus and flowers.

"It's going to mean our clients will have a place to relax, to enjoy so that their lives are more fulfilled," said David Greenberg, CEO of the League for People with Disabilities.

The stream is a gift from a national group of pondscapers. More than a dozen businesses contributed $100,000 worth of labor and materials.

"It kind of validates what we're doing. We're providing great services for people with disabilities, and other people want to be involved in that. And they're doing it any way they can," said Greenberg.

About 25 tons of mountain stone rocks and boulders were shipped in from Tennessee.

When the garden is completed, it will qualify as a wildlife refuge and sanctuary, and the landscape will change even more.

"It's a great way that anybody anywhere, whether you do a big garden like this or a small garden, can help restore the ecosystem, and create a really great place where people can connect with nature," said David Mizejewski with the National Wildlife Federation.

The installation of the new stream is part of the National Pond Expo and Conference being held at the Radisson Plaza this week.
