Video Released Of Moments Before Fatal Stabbing

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

A family is torn apart from a senseless crime.  Carlos Santay-Carillo was stabbed to death at a gas station while he fueled his car, getting ready to take his pregnant wife to the hospital to give birth.

Mike Hellgren reports police are intensifying their investigation to find the murderer on the run.

Eyewitness News has discovered there is surveillance video of Carlos Santay-Carillo taken from the inside of a nearby store shortly before he was stabbed to death.  Seconds after seeing our live report on the murder, the store owner called police to report what could be key evidence in this case.

Eyewitness News has watched that video several times.  It shows the victim buying a phone for his pregnant wife while an unidentified man follows him into the store and watches him.  As he leaves, the man follows him out the door.  That's where the video ends.

The store owner is now turning that footage over to investigators.

Police are blanketing the area with flyers, seeking any witnesses.

Congressman Elijah Cummings was at the gas station shortly after the stabbing.  As he held the victim, who was a recent immigrant from Guatemala, Cummings tried to calm him down, quickly dialing a friend who speaks Spanish.

"I said 'how do you say, stay down and it's going to be alright.' I kept saying over and over again, 'stay down, it's going to be alright,'" said Cummings.

Police say the suspect grabbed Santay-Carillo, ordering him to give him money.  Santay-Carillo momentarily broke free before the suspect stabbed him multiple times.

This occurred hours before his wife gave birth to their son.
