Monument Lighting Kicks Off Holiday Season
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Baltimore has its own traditions.
As
Kai Jackson reports, on Thursday night it was the lighting of the Washington Monument.
Bright lights and wide eyes were seen at the 38th annual Washington Monument lighting in Mt. Vernon.
"I'm not from here. I'm from Daytona Beach, Fla. and I just love it. It's beautiful, very cheerful and I just love it," said one person.
There's lots to love about the tradition.
"I'm just so happy to be out here because my brother is in the Baltimore City College Choir," said one youngster.
The stars of every lighting are the brightest lights in the sky--the fireworks. As people wandered about, they pondered about the beginning of the holiday season.
"It's a tough time, and it gives you an opportunity to come out and enjoy your neighborhood," said Iman Awad.
To add to the show, this year there were 14 times as many lights. Those lights were a lot smaller, but a lot more energy efficient than the old lights.
There were other changes, as well.
"This year it's a little different than years past because we're going to completely choreograph the music and we've added special effects," said Andy Suehie, image engineering.
Festivities began around 5:30 p.m. Mayor Sheila Dixon did attend the lighting.
Some 5,000 people were expected to attend the monument lighting.
